81/365 Book Fair

This week, I'm volunteering at the school book fair. It's uplifting to see children get so excited about books--not so uplifting to see them spend $20+ on pencils, pens and erasers :0

It also makes me a bit sentimental to think about my children picking up a Kindle or a Nook instead of a book someday. I feel as if it is inevitable...

First day of school

first day 2010

Today was the first day of school here. It was the first day of middle school for Joey and the first day of First grade for Sam.

In first grade (and actually in many grades at my kids' school), students are given a number to identify their papers, books, belongings, etc.

When Sam got out of school day, I asked if he met any new friends. He answered, "yeah, I met 18 and 20."

First day of school (finally!)

Joey certainly seems old hat at this whole school thing now that he is in fourth grade. I think he's just relieved to be going back--Joey LOVES school.

Sam was feeling strong before we set out for our walk to his first day of Kindergarten. He even asked me to take a photo of his new back pack.

But by the time we dropped off Joey and got to the Kindergarten entrance, Sammy didn't seem quite as enthused about this whole thing.

And after I kissed him good bye and he got in line, he really looked nervous! Poor little guy. Thank goodness, about 30 seconds after this photo was taken, his friend Caleb arrived!

He's home already (1/2 day Kindergarten) and is just fine. I think he's ready for his first homework assignment!
